another victim

This bug was a tragic victim of the wheel of a guerney we were using in my Emergency Medical Technician class last fall. It was just ironic that while trying to save one victim, we caused another life form to become a victim. Sounds similar to the dilemna of trying to save the human race by using technology, but then through technology, causing other life forms to become extinct.

Here's a quote from Pink Floyd Guitarist Roger Waters that relates:

"there was in the late 60s a notion that by making a lot of noise one could change things...The desire for change is still there...although young people's idealism is these days in danger of being subverted by religious bigotry [but despite the dark edge to much of his work, he is an optimist]." Yahoo News Article by: Robin Pomeroy, Nov. 17, 2005

His comment is similar to this picture, in that as many of us (republicans & democrats) want positive change, and to help the world, some people's idea of helping the world (including religious institutions ideals) cause other people to become victims as well (i.e. religious bigotry).

If we want to really make a difference, and help the world, we must be aware of each other and try first and foremost to co-exist.

Transparent Trash

I like the idea of tranparent Trash cans...so we can see what exactly it is that we are throwing away.

It's even nicer to see an empty transparent trash can.

life will prevail

A hopeful reminder to me that everything on this planet will be ok. While being concerned for the ecosystem is important, the earth and all it's life forms will actually be ok in the long run. This plant is taking back the land by weaving it's way up and through the fence that now resides on it's plot of soil. It really isn't about saving the earth. Like this plant, life will always find a way. Humans however should be concerned for their own survival. Without symbiotic relationships with the other forms of life we will not survive. So instead of "Save the Earth" it should really
be, "Save the Humans".

fallen life

Netting with leaf caught in it symbolizing what you want it to.

I think of it like a symbolic picture of the snags that biological

life often finds itself caught in because of manmade products.

Flight out of civilzation

a symbolic image of our flight from the machine of civilization and it's unsustainable installations.

Tree Freeze

Someday we may have to freeze trees just to have reminders of what they used to look like.

While at my paid(!!!!) photography gig this weekend at the Rouge in San Francisco, taking pictures for DJ Marc, I saw this beautiful carved block of ice.

Too cool.

rocket

This is my friend Justin and his wife Cassandra.
Recently I gave him a book called "The Spaceship and the Canoe".
When i see the retro looking rocket ship in the background it reminds
me of that book as in that book there were two characters, a father and son who were fascinated with polar opposite subjects. One was fascinated with exploring outter space in a space ship so that he may find a way for humanity to be saved from dying on this planet. The other was fascinated with exploring the world with his canoe so that he may find out ways for people to live on this planet and not have to perish.

I think that Justin and I are a great compliment to each other when it comes to this dilemna. Should we move out into space to save ourselves? Or should we find ways to live on this planet to save our selves? Maybe the answer will be a balance of both!

explode

Disneyland was just exploding with excitment on friday night as fireworks exploded above our heads and the fantasy land castle was lit up with different colors.

Adrien mentioned that there was a laser on water show that was going on next door, and mentioned that she sure doesn't really like fireworks as they scare her.

I can understand that. We are so weird. Why do we like shooting up exploding bombs and waching them? We must be an action oriented culture.

ooohhh....ahhhhhh.

Edible Tommorowland

I had no idea Disneyland of all places, consciously put in a PERMACULTURE garden at tommorowland. This made the whole trip to Disneyland much more conforting. Especially since I was aware that there were McDonald's advertisements and restaurants in Disneyland. Anyone promoting McDonalds doesn't seem to be too concerned about sustainable food production and healthy eating.

But the ironic twist is that Disneyland IS concerned with sustainable food production and healthy eating.

Since Disneyland hopes that in the future, there will be permaculture gardens and edible landscaping all over the place, all over the Tommorowland section of Disneyland they have installed edible landscaping, just as one of the fundamental teachings of permaculture promotes.

In this picure (which I admit, I didn't take)i am standing next to the entrance to Tommorow Land, and right there in the middle of the lanscaping is lettuce, Rosemary, ARTICHOKES!, and ECHINACEA!!! WOWOWOWOWOWOWOW. GO DISNEYLAND!!! (but get rid of McDonald's)

bunny love

Every wonder what it would look look like if the animals personificated us? Well, while at Disneyland, this Winny the Pooh character (can't remember the name), sat on the ground and held a child and cradled it. It just looked so funny, and eeerie to see a giant rabbit holding a tiny little human baby. It just seemed like a visual example of what it would be like if the animals treated us like we treat them. SCARY! How would you like to be held and petted by a huge bunny!?!?!!

watersprout

sprouting a leak from her head, this little girl decided to run and catch the water as it was coming down for a landing...as she was the ultimate water conservationist.

Well ok. Not really. but it was so fun to watch the kids play with these computerized water fountains at Disneyland's California Adventure park in the bugs life play zone.

arabic

looks like arabic writing!I took this shot of the lights from inside the Pirates of the Carribean Ride at Disney Land as I passed by the Blue Bayou restaurant.

downsize

many of us should take heed of the consequences of overconsumption and downsize our lives. For example...we can ride in smaller cars, live in smaller houses, buy less stuff, work out of our homes instead of huge office buildings, and....ride smaller bikes? nah...it's the thought that counts Adrien!

target

Whose the target audience in this picture?

Is it the birds...or the humans?

See...this photograph was taken at a bus stop where there are hundreds of pigeons walking around on the ground. Maybe some people feed them. I guess that has encouraged the pigeons to stay there. Sometimes there are pigeons sitting on the telephone wires above the bus stop. I guess a good reason the sign is there is that if you feed the pigeons, they stick around, sit on the wires, and then drop bombs on the people below at the bus stop.

So I guess this sign isn't to stop making birds fat...it's to stop people from being targets for the bird bombs.

worth it?

In our struggles to figure out how to fix our cars and keep them on the road, i often wonder "is it worth it?"

Like this picture of my friend Dave, working on his engine, and struggling to figure out which part is broken, I often wonder why we spend so much of our time, money, and other resources on our cars.

Transportation in this society needs to be changed BADLY. I was talking with a woman last night at a halloween party (who was dressed as a sperm (from the woody allen movie "everything you always wanted to know about sex but were afraid to ask), and she was telling me that she spends very little time in a car and most of her time on a bike.

Think about it:

A car costs a lot of money to buy.

A car costs a lot of money to insure.

Driving a car costs gas money. That gas had to come from somewhere abroad as the United States doesn't really have any domestic oil. We often get that oil from contries we have invaded or had some sort or political or violent turmoil with.

Driving cars also costs expensive repair money.

Cars are pollute the earth and probably cause global warming which is now probably causing catastrophic hurricane weather to kill people and damage things.

Cars also are made of not only many metal parts (which come from strip mining which damages the earth) but also from many plastic parts (which come from oil, and we already talked about how that is not a good thing).

Driving cars also makes us lazy and fat. Nobody gets any excercise from driving a car.

Driving cars are dangerous. The roads are full of accidents EVERY DAY.

ARE WE INSANE? the definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and trying to get different results.

How about riding bikes?

Bikes don't cost as much as cars.

Bikes don't need to be insured.

The only fuel you need to put into a bike is what you would feed yourself...so you are killing two birds with one stone there.

Most people can fix a bike themselves for very cheap and with few extra parts.

Bikes don't pollute the earth, and the metal and plastic they use are very small compared to that of a car.

People get a lot of excercise from riding bikes and stay healthy this way.

Bikes are mostly dangerous because of the danger of them getting hit by cars. If there were no cars on the road and only bikes, it would be extremely rare for people to die from a bike to bike accident.

The only loss from riding a bike is the distance you are able to travel is dramatically reduced. But honestly, I believe that most people would benefit from traveling less distances every day. It would localize our lives, give us more incentive to create and invest in our immediate communities, and would enable us to actually say hi to people as we walked or biked down the paths.

Let's think about the opportunity cost of driving and move on towards something that is worth our time, energy, and health!
